Hotel Review – Oriental Hotel, Georgetown, Malaysia

As a sort of catch up here are reviews of some the hotels that we have stayed in so far on the journey. These are our views and as such may should not be taken as comprehensive, before booking any hotel do your own checking, I suggest using http://www.tripadvisor.com/ which we have found to be a very helpful website, also please take your time to add your reviews to Trip Advisor as it helps your fellow travelers.

We stayed just one night in the Oriental Hotel, Georgetown, Penang, Malaysia. I had found the hotel in the Rough Guide to Malaysia book which described it as a moderate price hotel. Well, I won’t be trusting this publication with my hotel recommendations again.

It was our intention to stay longer at this hotel but for some strange reason that I never quite understood, I found it impossible to book more than one night at the reception.

The reception experience was quite something as a procession of men in dirty white shirts served us, they were all miserable as hell quite unlike anything i have experienced in Malaysia before, it was quite bizarre.

The rooms were at best poor and dirty, the wall paper was not only peeling from the wall of our room but also dirty. The air conditioning had no working controls so it was on, artic blast or off, way too hot . The bed was not pleasant and I spent the whole time in the room itching.

The view out of the window was over some derelict buildings and a mosque, the mosque will provide you with entertainment five times a day as the call to prayer seems to explode into your room which is no fun first thing in the morning.

The part of Georgetown the hotel is in is also not very attractive, OK excuse me while I backtrack, it’s frickin’ miserable.

I was so disappointed as I had heard so much about Georgetown and Penang and I am sure that actually it is as wonderful as the guide books say but sadly we were not in a nice area and the problems with the hotel and the less than attractive area just made us want to move on, we left on the first bus out the following morning. Georgetown for us remains an unfinished experience, we will go back but we will do more research and probably hire a car.
