Scorpions & Locusts

ooooo Yummy

Having pushed ourselves over  the previous days we felt a little lie in was deserved. We got up at 9:30am we decided that we’d explore Wangfujing Street, but first a Coffee was needed. We found a Costa and had a big coffee and a sandwich.

We then proceeded to march through all the shops. This was amazing because from the outside it looked like there were just designer shops and not much else, but behind and above these was a maze of interconnecting department stores. We resisted the temptation to buy many of the fascinating items, however Tes did find a very smart Chinese waistcoat.

Further on we found some stores with delightful smells emanating from them. They contained all manner of Chinese sweets and sweet meats. We wanted to find some dried plums, but in fact found all types of dried fruits wrapped in little packets. We tried some and found them to be really good, so we purchased a large bag full. I think the Pears were the nicest. People were eating sugared grapes and chestnuts on sticks… we resisted the temptation.

Further down, we found the famous food street we had been told about. This is where you can find all manner of insects and strange food. Tes had been boasting that she would eat scorpion, but when I saw live scorpions on sticks I thought she would chicken out… I was wrong… she pointed excitedly at a stick with four one inch long scorpions on it and chef gladly deep fried it and added chili, upon request. Tes crunched her way through the first one, then the second, she declared they were rather like prawn and finished them off.

Next up was the huge black scorpion. Again fried, and she happily crunched her way though it, pincers, head, tail and all, declaring that it was similar to crab.

By now I though she would have had enough, but she had to add locusts to the menu… in no time four locusts were dispatched to her belly.

She wanted to try the centipedes but I dragged her away telling her that they were not good. The reality is I just did not want to watch her eat more insects.

More wandering around the shops and then back for a rest and dinner. We were feeling rather lazy so it was room service and time for me to write up this log.. Xian tomorrow.
