As One Journey Ends Another Begins – China with G&T

So, Our Round The World Trip has ended, but never fear dear reader many more adventures are still to come, but in the mean time we have a new adventure as My Brother and Sister in Law, Guyon and Tess go to China for a trip.

Some background on Guyon and Tess (G and T).

My Brother in Law G, left the UK around 15 years ago to open up a new office for his company in Singapore. He spent ten successful years in Singapore opening up the Asian market for his company with offices all around the area.

Tess who is from the Philippines met Guyon when she was working in Singapore.

After ten successful years Guyon was asked to come back to the UK and take the role of MD working in London.

18 months later and fed up with the corporate lifestyle in London, Guyon decided it was time to make a move back to Asia and He and Tess moved to Manila in the Philippines.

In fact it was their enjoyment while living in Asia that made us first consider making the move and we did actually take a few journeys to the Philippines ourselves to look at property.

Anyway fast forward a few years to 30th October 2010 and the start of G&T’s trip to China.

Guyon and Tess are foodies so get ready to feel hungry.

30th October – Manila -> Hong Kong

We had a pleasant flight from Manila and arrived in Hong Kong safely and we took the airport express to the centre which was nice and efficient, arriving at Hong Kong station around 7:00pm.

We were greeted by a huge Taxi queue which was moving very slowly, and after over 30 mins in the queue, we then had to endure a bumpy 20 minute Taxi drive before we finally arrived at the City Garden Hotel.

We were tired and hungry.

The Hotel seems very nice, we had a great room, our only complaint would be that in what is a non-smoking room the bathroom stinks of stale cigarette smoke courtesy of the extractor blowing it in, presumably from other smoking Rooms.

We noticed an advert for a Singapore/Malay restaurant, which is on the ground floor of the hotel. As always these ads look great, but experience has taught me that Hotel restaurants are rarely any good, however, hunger and tiredness got the better of us and off we traipsed to the Satay Inn. I think the kindest thing I can say is that the beer was cold.

Tes had Chicken rice, the rice was hard and barely edible. I ordered Beef rending, which was mildly spicy fatty beef in coconut, no rice. The pork satay tasted ok but was very fatty. The whole meal was nearly 500 HK$, which is like GB£ 40 or US$60, frankly not a good deal.

We grabbed some Perrier and Evian and then made it to bed, where we also polished off the bottle of Moet we had carried along with us.
