We take a day trip in Melaka (Malacca), Malaysia

An enjoyable day out in the wonderful Malaysian town of Melaka (Malacca), Malaysia

(this happened on 1st Janaury 2011) in Melaka, Malaysia

Wonderful smiling welcome from the people at the Melaka Immigration desk

Well it’s the morning after the night before and we woke up late and our way to the tenders taking us ashore in Melaka (Malacca).

We love Melaka and have been a few times, so, once on ashore we started to walk towards the Jonkers Walk area, as we were doing so we noticed a few people wandering off in different directions. Sofia and I pointed them in the right directions.

I believe in the quest bto sell excursions by the cruise company, those travellers who prefer to do their own thing are rather left to fend for them selves. The information on the destination and local maps the ships crew hand out are woeful at best.

One couple I spoke to came our way, they were a Canadian chap and his Filipino girlfriend, we pointed them at all the things they might like and left them to it.

Ten minutes later we walked into a restaurant and they were already in there.

We were invited to sit with them and had a nice chat and then separated again.

Jonkers Walk the old chinese part of town, a very attractive area with lots of fun shops and good places to eat and drink.

The streets of Melaka have some beautiful buildings

It was actually too busy to be struggling down in the heat of the day as we had already seen the place on a number of occasions, so, after around 30 minutes we decided to head for the Hotel Puri our favourite hotel in town and went to their courtyard cafe for a nice cool drink and a sit down.

Ten minutes later they turned up, they really had listened to our recommendations!

Sofia enjoyed cold drinks and then headed back out for another go at Jonkers Walk!

We then followed it all up with a very slow walk back to the tender and back onto the boat for our last night onboard the Costa Classica.

Dinner was served and then the staff were paraded around as we stood and applauded them, we personally thanked the staff we had, had day to day contact with, they had all been superb.

Apart from the very poor entertainment’s on board everything was wonderful.

Back at our cabin we had to pack our bags and then place them outside of our cabin door ready to be taken away.

We have to vacate the room by 8:45am.

New Years Eve, A Few Hours In Penang

(This happened on Friday 31st December 2010) in Penang, Malaysia

New Years Eve

Our last visit to Penang (read about it here) was brief and terribly unsatisfactory with a frustratingly bad hotel (read about that here) with terrible service. So disappointed were we that our planned few days stay was dropped almost immediately in favor of a trip on the first bus out of ‘dodge’.

Our stay in Penang this time is even shorter a pathetic 4 hours.

With very little  open in Malaysia until around 11:00am that left a barely usable hour. But we decided nevertheless  and take a look around, and, we are very pleased we did.

The ship pier is in a good part of town, just a short walk from a nice Indian influenced area. We also luckily stumbled upon an old merchants house that was turned into a museum. It was stunning, really well presented and definitely worth going ashore for.

Chinese Merchants House Penang

After that we had a wander around all the Indian and Chinese shop’s and businesses.

Sofia took great delight in buying the finishing touches for her New Years Eve costume.

Then a bit of time walking around the streets and it was time to head back tot he ship, on the was we passed a park that was preparing for a big news years eve party, with a big stage and a band doing a sound check. Also, some guy was flying around on a powered hanglider.

Back on the Ship we vowed to return to Penang, it had won us over and given us a real interest in going back for longer next time.

We went to bed to rest ready for a big new years eve evening.

Then it was time for dinner, wagyu beef was totally unexpected but was superb, the food on board ship on the whole has been much better than I expected.

Sofia was dressed in a full on Indian costume (dot not woo woo) and she looked stunning (if I do say so myself) even the few genuine Indian ladies on board were complimentary.

She had gone the full mile, with traditional jewelry on her forehead, around her neck, her eyes and ears and both wrists and finally her hands. Amazing.

Back in the bar we drank as the on-board bands poured out their own particular brand of not very good entertainment, unlike the food the entertainment WAS as bad as expected.

Both entertainers a duo and a solo guy were using poor quality backing music and had a VERY limited range of songs which we heard every night and twice nightly at least we had to suffer Elton John’s, Nikita definitely not his best work, but these two ‘entertainers’ both played the same bloody song, often within a few minutes of each other, HORRIBLE.

As we moved to midnight the music was amped up as we had some old favorite disco songs done badly and because the set lists are so sure they started repeating their sets.

Save some money and get a decent DJ,  who can play different types of music for different occasions, pre dinner, post dinner, dance, relax, chill, what ever!

And, to cap it all the band obviously were not even aware that midnight was approaching and only a countdown shouted from the bar enabled everybody to know when the new year started. Sofia and I stayed until the bar was almost empty and finally went to bed, drunk and tired.

It could of course have been done much better but you cannot have everything I guess.

Langkawi, Malaysia, A Day Trip

(this happened on 30th December 2010 in Langkawi, Malaysia)

Eagle at the Mangrove Swap Langkawi, Malaysia

We walked off the ship at about 10:00am. The taxi’s lined up on the port only seemed willing to take us on a tour of the Island, so the two of us wanting a one way trip to Kaur were ignored.

So we set off to walk out of the port a short five minute walk, at the port gate were more taxi’s lined up. We were charged Rm28 (£5) for the journey.

Kaur failed to entrance us, it’s nothing special, so after a short walk we gave up and got a taxi to take us on a tour! (I guess the taxi’s at the port had a point).

Our driver first headed to the mangrove swamp.

I have seen mangrove swap before so i was not expecting much, we were dropped at the car park and paid for a one hour trip a whopping Rm250 (£50). We were put in  boat with a very knowledgable and friendly young guy who knew for sure that he had a great job.

He whisked us over the water in this beautiful area (don’t think swamp, think beautiful waterway) to an area where the Eagles feed, (Langkawi is famous for them) there were ten or more eagles flying around so it was quite stunning, although apparently the birds that come here are doing so because they know they get fed by the boats and are eating chicken skins that have been thrown from the boats over many years and so they have become lazy about hunting and apparently they are suffering from heart issues due to the fatty diet. Very sad, but they did look stunning flying free and swooping down to feed.

Our boat man showed us the old charcoal works, now closed as it would appear they realise that the mangrove is important to the island as a barrier against tsunami’s and also of course as a great draw for tourists.

Malaysia seems to be waking up to the possibilities that tourism brings.

We were also taken to see a floating fish farm, Sofia was not too sure about getting out of the boat onto the floating deck so stayed put. We then went for a further tour in the water heading out past a small island and some beautiful looking beaches. It was an expensive tour but next time we would stump up the money for a longer tour.

The taxi driver then promised us a beautiful water fall and took us to a place called Hutan Lipur Durian Perangin quite simply a disgrace that only Malaysia seems able to consider suitable to show people. If broken down unusable paths and bridges and plain and simple disgusting toilets are what are suitable for tourists on whats supposed to be the most upmarket Malaysian holiday Island. If you want to read more about Hutan Lipur check out this old post            http://worldtravelgapyear.com/travel/malaysia-travel/malaysia-needs-a-tourism-guru

Back to the taxi and we asked the driver to take us to a place we could do some shopping and then onto a nice beach.

I guess he misunderstood and took us to a tourist shop called Atma Alam Batik Art Village, actually this was a lucky break as unlike so many tourist shops around the world, this one was full of quality products with very few pieces of tat.

It was very interesting and completely changed our feelings about the seeming lack of culture in Malaysia, there was some stunning pieces there that we would have liked to buy.

After that we headed to the beach at Puntai Cepang a very nice swoosh of pure white powder with lots of life all around it. A lovely place that looks well worth a longer visit.

Time was moving on so with a afternoon thunderstorm starting we headed back to the ship.

Phuket, Thailand, Good Times

2011
11.02

(this happened on) Tuesday 28/29th December 2010) in Phuket, Malaysia.

Sofia and I had a nice relaxing lie in as the ship was not due to dock at Au Markham Port until 2:00pm.

So, at around 12:30pm we went for a leisurely and to be honest not very good lunch, then we headed to the bar for a quick drink and a to watch the view as the boat glided into port.

We had packed overnight bags and picked them up from the cabin and headed  ashore.

The taxi’s at the port were not interested in two people they wanted bigger groups and to do tours and tie them down to a return journey. We just wanted a one way trip.

We followed others who had also been ignored by those taxis and walked out of the port, (just a short walk). Parked outside the port were plenty of taxi drivers but they really did not seem keen to take anybody, eventually we agreed a 500baht fee to take us into Phuket Town, we found out that although overcharged it was not too bad as the usual price is 350 – 400 baht.

We strolled around Phuket Town for a couple of hours, we took a tuk tuk and were offered a discount if we went with the driver to a shop, you know the usual thing driver drops us off and gets a kick back, we did not mind and said yes as he was a nice guy, we walked in to this jewellers shop, watched the driver get his card stamped and we literally walked in, through the shop and out the other end ignoring all attempts to sell to us.

After further walking around town we got a taxi and went to Patong Beach, we had a nice safe drive there and were dropped off in a good position, at the fourth attempt we found a cheap but decent hotel and booked in for the night.

It was called Sheilaghs, a decent room with en-suite for 1000 baht. We dropped the bags and headed straight out.

It was cold beer o’clock. We heard that Patong was a tamer version of Pattaya, tamer definately but the place was heaving and I should imagine there are many more people walking around here than Pattaya.

The good news is that although the Russians have arrived, they are in nothing like the numbers who are busy spoiling Pattaya, I will probably never go back to Pattaya again, sorry I just don’t like Russians, I have yet to meet one I like or would trust.

After lots of shopping and a good few bars I found a roadside stall selling chicken hearts and livers, these were the best ever!

Then we headed into a restaurant called Baitong Seafood Restaurant where I had quite simply the best Tom Yum soup I have ever had by a wide margin, it was amazingly good.

After food we had more drinks and entertainment and we ended up in a bar called FBI Tai Pan, a live music bar that rocked. Nothing beats good live music, in Malaysia where we live many bars have live music but it’s almost always terrible filipino bands usually a few ‘pretty’ girls and a guy on the keyboards, truly awful and nothing does more to drive us away from bars than this.

FBI Tai Pan, A very entertaining music bar

But FBI, just like the Blues Bar in Pattaya was brilliant with great music, a thai band with two guitars, drums, keyboards and two little girl singers who could truly belt out a tune much bigger than they were. A bit later on in the set the girls introduced a ‘Mr Harry” and left the stage, an older shaven headed white dude walked onto the stage and the band started up the music for Smoke on the Water (Deep Purple) and I was filled with dread, I love that song. I need not have worried, the guy had a great voice, they seemed to have a rotating cast of singers all highly entertaining.

Here’s the deal, drinks here cost twice as much as a lot of the local bars but the entertainment really made it worth the money, we stayed for more than two hours.

Next we wandered back towards the hotel but when we got there we decided to keep walking to get some more drinks in a quieter bar. Well we found them, we were practically the only people in what was little more than a long narrow street bar open directly onto the street. At the first one we played some games of Pool and Connect 4 with the staff. At the next bar it was Connect 4 and Jenga, these people were Jenga Ninja Masters and in my well ‘lubricated’ state I was not much competition, it was a clean sweep for the staff, at least I managed to hold my own at Connect 4.

At around 3:00am we headed back to the hotel, they were advertising Cornish pasty and Chips so i had to try that and Sofia had a chicken kebab, both were good late night (early morning food). Time for bed.

*******Next Day*******

I woke at around 8:00am and left Sofia in bed and went for a walk with my camera.

I headed down the main streets and onto the beach, I also had a nice but quick (30 minute) oil massage it bwas very good not too strong.

Early Morning on Patong Beach

Back at the room and as Sofia was ready to go we checked out and got a taxi, there was a guy with a sign right outside the hotel, he approached us and we agreed 400 baht to take us to Phuket Butterfly World.

During the journey we came to a deal that the driver would take us to a few places and then back to the port. He wanted 1000 baht, I told him if he looked after us we would pay him 1500 baht (ain’t I a nice guy) so of course he was pleased with that.

At the Butterfly Park, Sofia and I took so many pictures our camera batteries went flat, The Butterfly World at Phuket is very much better than the one at Melaka (Malaysia) that we visited, that seemed to consist of rather too many dead and dying butterflies, Phuket Butterfly World however was supurb.

Phuket Butterfly Garden and Insect World

Then back to our driver ‘Sunny’ (Mr Sun tel: +668 1273 3660) we went into Phuket town and did a couple of hours shopping and also we had lunch and nice cold drinks in a cafe. Then we went back to the driver at the arranged time and headed back to the port. We had a last look around the little market set up at the port and spent our last few baht. We had enjoyed a fabulous few hours in Phuket and would love to go back for a longer visit.

Back onboard the Costa Classica, the evening was the usual boat fodder, pretty good food, poor table company, bloody bingo bango bingo, not very good music, how many times a week do you want to hear the awful Elton John song Nikita butchered by two different crappy backing track bands within a few minutes of each other. Horrible!!!!!

Port Klang, Malaysia

2011
10.19

(this happened on) 27/12/10

This morning I awoke at about 9:00am and we were already docked at Port Klang, Malaysia.

Port Klang

According to the internet there is not much to see or do in Klang, So heading to Kuala Lumpur for a few hours would seem to be the smart choice, however, not for us, we live in Malaysia and therefore have spent time in KL and a few hours would be a very expensive diversion.

So, we headed by taxi (Rm50) to the big AEON (Jusco) shopping mall at Klang Town.

We only had a few hours, so we had a relaxing tramp around the mall and then decided to go to the cinema and watch Tron Legacy,

Malaysian cinemas on the whole are mostly very good and very comfortable with one flaw, the air conditioning is always set to full arctic, so normally we take warm tops with us, but of course today we were not prepared so instead we froze. That did not stop us enjoying the film.

Our taxi driver met us at 3:300 as arranged and soon enough we were back on boat the ship.

It was back to cards and a refreshing drink, during the cards I managed to cut Sofia’s lead back to 100 points and yet soon enough I was back even further behind, over 400 points. Dinner was very good as we have come to expect.

Sadly our table is shared with a very old couple who while I am sure they are very nice, we have nothing in common, they don’t seem that keen on going ashore and they moan a lot, even more than I do, and I am an olympic level moaner.

In the bar tonight they managed to play the bloody bingo game which drove us from the bar. Really this is entertainment in the main bar on a cruise nowadays? I don’t think so.

Tomorrow and the next day we are in Phuket (Thailand), Sofia and I plan to make the best of it, I am very excited.
